Juneteenth, or Freedom Day is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This holiday is considered the longest-running African-American holiday and has been called America’s second Independence Day.

Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas. Though Juneteenth was technically yesterday (6/19), let us honor this holiday today and the impact that has followed from the end of institutional bondage and thus true freedom to ALL people.
