Our pay it forward, C5BDI giveback continues! Our team recently committed resources and funding to support the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST). Thank you very much to James Mershon from our team for recommending such an outstanding cause. Homelessness in the City of Norfolk doubled during the pandemic. While the city has run its NEST program for several years, it was able to regroup and, through partnerships with several different churches and groups, including the Norfolk Department of Human Services, the team was able to maintain in providing meals and shelter to homeless single adults during the winter months. The Norfolk Community Service Board started a daily hotel housing program last summer using COVID-19 funding, which provided 120 homeless adults, considered “most vulnerable” to the health effects of the coronavirus, safe on-site access to support services. While that program plans to continue, the City of Norfolk has come up with a 2021 plan in the grand opening of a semi-permanent shelter and day center that went into effect May 1, 2021 on Church Street, to be followed in November with a permanent solution.
